About Skal International Las Vegas

Skal International Las Vegas – Club 245
Chartered October 21, 1963

An abbreviated summary of the history of the Club, as recorded by Bill Kellogg.

In March of 1963, Larry Decker, at the request of several airline colleagues from the Los Angeles SKAL Club accepted the invitation and challenge to organize and establish an active Las Vegas SKAL Club.  Las Vegas, “The Entertainment Capital of the World”, a national and international tourism destination was truly a logical city for a club, which upholds the ideals and needs of Skålleagues.

On October 21, 1963 at the Sands Hotel, Chuck Lawson, President of the North American SKAL Council, formerly chartered the SKAL Club of Las Vegas and presented the credentials and SKAL banner to President Larry Decker. The historic and gala event included visiting SKAL dignitaries from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix and Cleveland.  The founding and charter members were:

Larry Decker - Bonanza Airlines
Jim White - Bonanza Airlines
Chuck Unser - National Airlines
Ray Culley - Trans World Airlines
Walt Wehner - United Airlines
Al Adams - Delta Airlines
Mike Cole - Willis/Cole Travel

With strong leadership and direction, the Las Vegas Skal Club became and remains very active in the pursuit of tourism and the organization’s objectives.

The Las Vegas SKAL Club savors the memories of its founding, Congress participation, new professional associations, energies of the leadership and true fellowship of its members and we are particularly proud of our well earned prestigious accomplishments:

-Hosting one N.S.C.U.S.A. Congress – 1965

-Hosting two International A.I.S.C. Congress – 1971 and 1983

-Annual Scholarship to the University of Nevada – Las Vegas for use by a qualified dependent of a Skalleague worldwide.

-$10,000 contribution to the Florimond Volckert Fund, with ongoing contributions.  The fund aids needy family members of deceased Skalleagues worldwide.

A gala affair was held at the Sands Hotel on October 21, 1988 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Club at the same hotel.  Nearly 200 guests, including several of the charter members, a stellar group of visiting N.A.S.C.U.S.A. dignitaries, and many guests from other Clubs around the USA were in attendance.

The past success and integrity of the Las Vegas SKAL Club provides a firm platform for progress throughout the nineties.  This abridged historical summary was developed from a documented history prepared by Bill Kellogg.
